More detail about the courses and dissertation for the Masters in Sport Policy, Management and International Development.

Compulsory courses

MSc students will be required to take all of the following compulsory courses.

Sport Resource Management

This course critically examines the management of human, physical and financial resources at the strategic level across sport. It assesses governance, organisational development and strategy, quality assurance, and performance management within sport organisations.

The course also discusses the application of risk management, event organisation, and financial analysis to sport.

Sport Marketing and Communications

This course develops a critical appreciation of marketing and communication concepts, such as advertising, branding, integrated marketing communication, persuasion, public relations and sport sponsorship, and their increasing relationship with the traditional mass media and new social media.

Students will critically analyse current sport-related communication campaigns using a range of local, national and international case studies.

Sport and the Media

Media-sport is now the recognised term for describing the sport and media nexus. This course seeks to develop this well-established area of study, analysing long-term and contemporary developments that have emerged in the world of mediated sport.

The media has helped construct what is meant by sport and continues to play a central role in the process by which dominant, residual and emergent sport practices and meanings are defined, legitimated and marginalised.

These relationships are continually evolving alongside new media technological developments. The relationships between sport and the media should, therefore, form a central element in the social scientific study of contemporary sport management.

Sport, Society and International Development

This course provides a critical analysis of the increasing links between sport and international development agendas. It critically examines the role of sport in humanitarian agendas and its contribution to conflict resolution in divided communities. It will critically assess the role of global corporations in sport-in-international agendas, and examine the power of sport to deliver social change in the Global South.

Sport Policy

This course will explore the role of local and national governments and the state in shaping the development of sport and how it is experienced in the contemporary world. It will examine the role of politics in sport policy and promote critical analysis of the nature and impact of state intervention in sport.

The course considers the role of transnational government organisations on sport policy and discusses the contribution of macro and meso-level theories to the analysis of sport policies.

It also examines the current opportunities and challenges facing those wishing to link sport to wider social policy agendas, such as crime prevention, health improvement and community building through sustainable sport development practice.

Dissertation

The dissertation is an independent research project of approximately 15, 000 words. You will be able to select your topic from a list supplied by staff or you can - with the help of staff - tailor it to your particular research / career objectives.
